Amazon’s New Content Generator

Amazon has released a new service (still in beta) called Mechanical Turk.

It looks like a great way for companies to find cheap labor, and an easy way for those willing to work cheaply to find work. From the website:

Requesters can submit virtually any task that can be completed using a computer connected to the Internet.

This seems like a great way to get unique, human-readable content. With a marketplace like this the competition for work is going to drive down the price and I’m interested to see how little people are willing to work for.

Unfortunately, it looks like the work is only open to those in the U.S., but I know one or two stay-at-home moms that wouldn’t mind earning some extra income while the kids are at school or taking a nap. Plus, I don’t think it will be long until our friends in lower-income countries are allowed into the system or find a way to break in.

This is a great idea for Amazon. It allows them to be the middleman for thousands of outsourcing jobs and they have the muscle to challenge the freelance and work-at-home sites if Mechanical Turk gains traction.
