GoDaddy Is Pushing .info
I think it’s interesting that during a time when GoDaddy is getting a large amount of publicity, they’ve decided to make .info the default TLD when someone searches for a name on their homepage.
My guess is that godaddy assumes most of the people who visit their site (and certainly most of the people who will come as a result of watching the Super Bowl ad) are newbies and don’t realize the value of each TLD. A large portion of the people watching the Super Bowl ad are going to naively think to themselves, “hey, I wonder if insert-popular-niche-here.com has been registered?”
What they don’t want is these potential customers coming to their site with grand ideas about their new website, only to find that their great .com name is already taken. In other words, they don’t want users to see this:

So instead they show them this:

A very clever marketing tactic if I do say so myself! Especially when you consider that if the more expensive .com is available, they show this:

Is this deceptive? A little. I think a majority of the people who register those .info domains are going to regret it, but I’m not one to judge. If I was spending that much money on an ad, I’d pull out every trick in the book too!
Are you doing everything you possibly can to convert customers? Are you willing to make them feel like they’re getting what they want, even if that’s not the case?
Godaddy is!
