Google Increases Its Market Share Of Evil
Google’s stated mission direct from it’s corporate website is:
Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
That didn’t sound so bad back in 2000 when Google was just a search engine. I guess I was naive enough to assume that by “world’s information” Google was talking about organizing all the websites about cats.
That, in and of itself, seemed like a noble goal.
Fast-forward a few years, and Google is worth $138,000,000,000.00. No, that isn’t a misprint or an exaggeration.
Just to put some perspective on this, Google is now worth more than other American mainstays McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi. Comparing it to other heavyweights in the online world, it’s worth three ebays, nine Amazons, and two Yahoo’s.
Let’s take a step back and consider the following scenario. Imagine if I had $138 billion and I wanted to store, organize and profit from the world’s information. Would you willingly hand me all of your personal emails, spreadsheets, business documents, schedule, and website conversion data? Would you let me monitor everything you do on your computer, and online?
No, you wouldn’t.
So why do millions of people hand this information over to Google? Do their products really make our lives that much more convenient that we’re willing to give up all of our privacy for their profit?
Apparently they do.
Google’s latest product offering is a CPA advertising network to complement its current CPC ad network. If you want to participate, however, you obviously have to give Google all your conversion data.
No thanks. I think I’ll pass.
Luckily for us, Google’s mission is to organize this information and make it universally accessible. Which means we can all expect to get a glimpse of the participants’ conversion data, advertisements, and keywords, right?
I’m not going to hold my breath.
The truth is, Google is going to continue to organize the world’s information and pick and choose what is universally accessible.
Oh well, at least I have some more pictures of cats to look at.
Thanks, Google!
