I’m Jealous

I first came across the Net Business Blog by reading a face off between John Chow and Matt Coddington. I knew who John Chow was, but I had never heard of Matt.

What caught my eye was the claim that Matt’s blog is only two months old and has 3-4K visitors per day. See, I started WageRank about the same time, but I’m only seeing about 100 uniques per day.

Being the competitive person that I am, I thought it would be interesting if I held my own face-off between myself and Mr. Coddington to see what I’m doing wrong and what he’s doing right. Here it goes:

cdc

Matt
Edge
How long have you been blogging? 3 months 3 months Edge: Tie
How many hours do you dedicate to your blog daily? On average, probably 1 4-5 hours Edge: Matt
What is the average number of daily posts on the blog? .5 2-3 Edge: Matt
Have you ever invested money in promotion? No, never. I’ve bought 2 paid reviews Edge: Matt
How many page views the blog generates daily? ~100 on average 3-4 K Edge: Matt
What is the blog’s monthly revenue? Not enough to show up on my radar yet, but certainly less than $1K. $1k - keep in mind it’s only 2 months old Edge: Matt
How many lunatics in Montana have you pissed off with your blog? 0 1 Edge: Matt
How many times has your blog been on the front page of digg? 0 more than 0 Edge: Matt
Where do you currently live? A Mediterranean island South Carolina Edge: cdc

Winner: cdc

Hell ya! I totally pwnd Matt in that face-off. Living on an island rules!

But in all seriousness, there is alot I can take away from this experiment. The most obvious thing is that I really need to start pissing off more people in Montana. Once I have that out of the way, it looks like I need to post more often and promote my blog a little more.

I’m not sure if I’ll have time to post more often than my current rate of a few times per week, but I could be doing a better job getting the word out about WageRank. Maybe I’ll try buying a paid review or two in the next couple months.

In case you were wondering, yes this is another link whoring attempt because Matt recently announced that he’s holding a review contest. This is my entry, so let’s get on with the review.

The main reason why NBB has gained popularity so quickly is because of the high-quality (and digg-ready) articles on the site. If you haven’t seen some of the NBB posts on the front page of digg, here are a few that I think the WageRank audience would enjoy:

Building A Niche Minisite Part 1 and Part 2
Link Building Through Design
Domaining 101: Parking

I’ve also gone ahead and added NBB to the “Sites I Visit” blogroll and I have already added him to my personal RSS Reader.

I do have to say something critical of NBB, otherwise this would be an ass-kissing instead of a review. My only real problem with the site is the use of the Large Rectangle Adsense blocks in the content. When I see those huge blocks right in the middle of each post I immediately become skeptical of the owner’s motives.

Then again, Matt must be doing something right because NBB is not only earning much more than this blog, but it also has 10x as many feed subscribers as WageRank.

The lesson as always: don’t listen to me.

Oh, phooey! Your blog is way better than his. But his is OK too. John Chow? that guy will be working for a boss next year (but he’ll make plenty of $$$ - internet fanboys are like crack to CEO’s these days)
