January Status Report

At my 9-5 job (which I quit a few months ago) each engineer had to write up Weekly Status Reports for every project they worked on and send the reports to their project leads. The leads would then collate everyone’s report and pass it on to the secretary, who would then pretty them up and send them off to the customer (the U.S. government).

In case there was any doubt, yes this is an example of your tax dollars at work.

Anyway, I hated doing this every week, but because I enjoy punishing myself I decided to do monthly status reports here on WageRank. One of my goals with this blog was to “tell you what I’m working on and why.” I think doing monthly status reports will help me stay true to that goal.

Here it goes:

Tasks Completed
1. Threw a web front-end on a tool that I had been using for a while and launched it: DIRZAP.

2. Created and sent out the first monthly newsletter for my online store.

3. I decided that before I jumped into affiliate marketing I wanted a system that would track how well each of my ads and landing pages (and the different combinations of each) were working. I built a system from scratch because I didn’t see anything that did exactly what I needed it to without overloading features and being way too expensive.

4. Began my forray into affiliate marketing by creating my first two landing pages for some of the products in my online store. It was a complete failure. I would have received $20 for every sale and I spent a little over $30 on Adwords without even one person clicking through to the sale page. I obviously need to rethink my landing page strategy.

5. Continued building MFA sites and getting links. I had to start over in December and January so I only made 1/10th of the amount I made in November. I’m hoping to be at 1/2 of my old revenue by March.

6. When the overture keyword tool broke, I tried both Wordtracker and Wordze. I hated Wordtracker and loved Wordze. More on this later.

Goals For February
1. One of my friends from high school had an idea for a complex web application that would serve a fairly narrow niche. It is a good idea so he got my attention. However, I suggested we build a forum first and use that as a launching pad for the webapp. I’m hoping to launch the forum before Valentine’s Day.

2. Speaking of forums, I’m going to spend a little more time at affiliate earners and re-read alot of posts (like this one and this one) before I spend any more time making landing pages. Now that I’ve done it once and failed I’ll have a little more insight into the conversations that are going on over there.

3. I want to add the ability for users to see the directories they have skipped and submitted to in DIRZAP. I’m also setting aside some time to work on more user suggestions, so if you have feature requests let me know.

4. Now that I have my Wordze subscription I should be able to pump out MFA sites at breakneck speed.
