Newsletter #1 Update
It’s a been a week since I sent the first issue of my newsletter to our store’s customer base. Here are some stats:
Sales
Comparing this week to the same time period last year, we had an increase of $300 in sales.
Coupon Usage
The newsletter included a $5 coupon, but surprisingly only two people took advantage of it. I know that at least four of the orders were from returning customers, which means I sent them the newsletter. I wonder how many of my emails ended up in the recipient’s Spam folder. Well, the good news is that I only “lost” $10 from the coupon.
Subscribers
In accordance with the spamming laws, I gave the recipients a way to opt-out of the newsletter. A week later, only two customers (about 1%) decided they did not want to receive the newsletters.
This is the first issue of my first newsletter, so I’m not really sure what other statistics I should be concerned with. I know there are ways to see who actually opened the emails, and I may try something like that in the future.
Is there anything else I should look at?

You need to emded a hosted image in the newsletter. That way you can tell from your server logs how may people actualy read the letter. My mail programs will not show embeded images for this reason but that stat would be better then nothing. I’m not an expert on the method but I know of it. Do some googleing to find out more.
CDC,
Another cool thing to track is if you are putting links into these emails that lead to an onsale item or landing page stuff like that, you can set these links as campaigns in Google Analytics so that you can see how many dollars you are making from clickthroughs from the emails themselves. This will become more useful as your email list grows. Maybe you are already doing this, since you know how much you are making from the newsletter to date. But adding tags to the links will automate the GA setup (if you use that) and will tell you which link users are clicking on.
anyway, best of luck.
